Rooftop Restaurant & Bar at The Royal Shakespeare Company - Restaurants in Stratford upon Avon
What is it?
Wrapping around the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, the Rooftop Restaurant and Bar span the top of this architecturally redesigned 1930s building. The double height space seats up to 150 people. During the day floor-to-ceiling windows on all three sides bathes the dining room in glorious natural light and most tables enjoy views across the Bancroft Gardens or the River Avon. The design is contemporary, with a nod to the Art Deco style of the original building and includes many reclaimed features from the old theatre.
The restaurant opens daily from 11.30am (12 noon on Sundays); serving freshly prepared and simply cooked modern British food in informal surroundings throughout the day and into the evening. Ingredients are seasonal and include, wherever possible, produce from the nearby Vale of Evesham and the Cotswolds. A children’s menu is also available. Whether it’s a light meal, a family lunch, a drink in our bar, a pre or post theatre meal or a night out with friends, the restaurant is for everyone looking for an informal atmosphere with great food and friendly service in unique surroundings.

The restaurant has always been quiet when we have popped up to have a looked, but I guess peak times are just before plays. We finally tried it out last weekend and were seriously impressed with the food, especially the vegetarian option of smoked garlic polenta and summer vegetables which makes a nice change from the usual risotto cop out that most restaurants offer! My husband also had a pigeon breast starter which was lovely. They were happy for us to bring and feed our five month old too and it was a nice way to enjoy the sunny afternoon overlooking the river and park.

The limited menu available before a matinee was rather down to earth and unappetising eg ‘scrubbed roots and goats’ curd’ or “corn fed chicken’s leg’, kidneys, and pollock, giving the impression they had gone for inexpensive food .There was no toast or crusty bread with the rather runny pate first course, only slices of white bread.
The puddings were not very good, especially the Eve’s pudding.
I do feel the menu needs a rethink as it is not cheap.I would not want to go again despite the pleasant -looking surroundings and view.It is a wasted opportunity.
