Where is it?
At the top of Sheep Street in the centre of town.
What is it?
A café/bar/restaurant.
What makes it different?
It is set in the most idyllic oak beamed building which has remained virtually unchanged since it was built in the late 1400's. It serves breakfast from 10-11.45, then á la carte from 12.00 through until 10pm. Being in close proximity to the RSC it is perfect for pre- theatre lunch or supper.
Our experience
The Vintner has been a very important part of my life and memories. It was ‘the place to be seen’ when I was a teenager and we used to fight for the table upstairs with the window to have coffee after a shopping trip with friends. When I finally reached the grand old age of 18, then the Vintner was the place to meet for a drink or pop in on the way home for a naughty cake and ‘one last drink’.
So here I am at the grand old age of …..(now that would be telling) and finding myself invited to a 40 th birthday in the private dining area upstairs. I never even knew it existed!!!! A fabulous chestnut dining table (which seats up to 20 people), a set menu and a private bar area all for a fantastic £25.95 per head.
We were even allowed to pop in before hand and decorate the place with loads of embarrassing banners and photos to remind the birthday boy of his youth.
Greeted by champagne from our private bar on arrival, the party got off to a fine start. I decided to go for a relatively healthy option (being on a pre-wedding diet) and had the salmon to start and a steak for mains. They kindly swapped the french fries for salad on request. The steak was a very popular choice and rightly so. DELICIOUS! Unfortunately after all the champagne and a super bottle of Chianti I forgot I was on a diet and ordered the chocolate torte. Best decision I’d made since I started the diet. Absolutely scrumptious.
Basically we had a ball that night. Great company, super food and wonderful service …and all in our own dining room. He couldn’t have wished for a better birthday.
So, whether you’ve grown up in Stratford, and take it as part of your everyday life, or are a first time visitor to the town, the Vintner has not to be missed. It still has its little surprises!
