Where is it?
Located near the centre of town a short walk from Shakespeare's birthplace.
What is it?
This popular gastro pub is particularly popular with the over 30s.
What makes it different?
Since the smoking ban, the bar area downstairs has become a popular place to meet after work and also party at the weekend. At the back and upstairs you will find a quality restaurant serving reasonably priced, (and locally sourced), honest food.
The pub has a tree as the centerpiece of a covered courtyard which is opened in the summer and doubles as extra seating in the winter months. Regular menu changes makes this a fashionable haunt for both locals and tourists alike.
In the early hours of the evening, tasty nibbles are distributed around the bar area to entice you to experience their restaurant menu.
Our experience
A romantically lit table for two with good (prompt) service. My partner started with the crispy pancakes which he described as ‘perfect’ and then we moved on to the rack of lamb to share (from the specials board) with roast vegetables, fresh greens and chunky chips on the side. From the considered wine list we opted for the Baron de Ona Reserva 1999 Rioja. The lamb was beautifully displayed on a large wooden board, and cooked pink (as we had ordered) to perfection. The varieties of vegetables were great although the trendy little pots they came in were a little difficult to serve from! We chose to skip the dessert menu (although only through full stomachs) but the puds on offer sounded delicious and all for around the £5 mark. The experience was enjoyable all round. Good quality food and wine cooked and served by people that you really felt cared about what they were doing. We will certainly be going back.

To celebrate the night before one of my best friends got married, we all met at the One Elm to toast the end of his singledom! The restaurant was very accommodating (especially as we messed them about as far as numbers were concerned). When we did finally turn up (even though slightly depleted in numbers) they were still extremely friendly and patient.
The choice of the evening seemed to be steak, but my husband (with his healthy appetite!) tried out the new crispy pancakes to start. He loved them and felt that they were even an improvement on the last ones…..and they were hard to beat!
Our steaks arrived (as usual) on perfectly displayed platters and cooked just as we’d requested. Isn’t that just the best sign of a good restaurant? The best man’s wife ‘H’ opted for the calorie crazy belly pork…..but I must admit it looked absolutely yummy. We polished the lot off with a bottle of bubbly and toasted the young man and his future bride. It was another super night at the One Elm. It’s a place you can depend on, on a night when you just want to relax with good friends.
Thank you. We had a super time.
