Bensons is a tea room, serving breakfasts, hot lunches, sandwiches and afternoon teas.
What makes it different?
Bensons serves afternoon tea with champagne!!! Not your usual run of the mill establishment.
Our experience
We popped in for an early afternoon snack whilst out shopping in town. The place was really busy (always a good sign) and this was well after the lunchtime rush. There was so much too choose from on the menu including a fantastic array of freshly made sandwiches and sumptuous cream cakes. The couple next to us were in the middle of the famous Bensons afternoon tea with champagne. It looked amazing and was beautifully presented on a traditional 3-tiered cake stand.
We opted for the croque monsieur and a club sandwich with two pots of coffee. I was delighted to get filter de-caf! A rarity in most places. The service was exceptional and the waiter was very sympathetic when I took ages to choose even though they were very busy. Our choices were delicious, on immaculately presented platters. The downside was that we were seated with a direct view into the kitchen area and the constant opening and closing of doors and clattering of plates. It’s a tiny place and with such a wonderful menu I think more thought should be given to the environment and the furniture. It somehow just doesn’t match.
Excellent food, but not really a locals haunt, more the kind of place you would save for a treat.
Ideal for tourists coming for the Shakespeare experience.
