Restaurants a curious 12 year old might like?

I was in Stratford last year for a week for GANDALF/LEAR and loved the city, and now am taking my wife and kid to see DR. WHO/HAMLET in July.

I am asking for your opinion on The Vintner and Hussein's and Lamb's; I loved One Elm Tree; my kid wants to know best fish and chips shop in Stratford; and do you know a good lunch food alternative to the Warwick Castle food?

We're staying at the Holiday Inn to save money and will use the Marks and Spenser market to save money? Any other ideas on good food bargains? Thanks for your blog and any ideas you can offer!!!

Dear Mark,

As far as fish and chips are concerned you must go the Kingfisher on Ely street in the centre of town for your best experience. Don't be swayed by the tourist trap one on the front by the theatre. It's not bad...but it's not the best.

As far as Warwick is concerned, I would either make up a Marks and Spencer's picnic (that's what we do when we go to the castle) or walk up to the centre of town afterwards and eat at the Kozi bar in the Market place. It's quite new, fun and with reasonably priced really fresh food.

My day job is as a teacher so I asked my kids where they liked to eat. Probably the answer you would get world wide...Pizza! We have quite a few in town. The best is at the Hole in the Wall (Bar Room Bar) on Guild St. and on Tuesdays they do do two for one which is fantastic value for money. (Just check this offer is the same day when you come because it may change). It's not great inside (more of a late night bar) but if the sun's shining there's a fantastic roof top terrace which is really pretty and better for kids.

Other than that I would reccommend Pizza Express on Ely st. which also has a nice outside eating area. Avoid Pizza land!!!
One last place if you are in Warwick for the day and fancy eating out in the evening is Piccolinos (Italian obviously!) at 31 Smith St. I used to live down the road from there when I started teaching and on a budget we used to eat there regularly. It is no frills, really good traditional Italian cuisine, with basic but very comfortable surroundings. Never had a bad meal there!

I am sorry to say that I have actually never been to Husseins but can reccomend Lambs and The Vintner 100%. I am just about to write up a Vintner review next. They are actually owned by the same people so the standards are the same, but I would say that the Vintner was more child friendly and the building is just idylic, even if you just pop in for a coffee. Food is exceptional in both but not cheap. Probably about £40 per head for dinner without drinks. If you are going to treat yourself in Stratford then it's definitely the place. If you go for coffee make sure you get the seat in the window or the one up stairs by the window. It's great to watch the world go by.

Have a fabulous time...and just get back if you have any other queries.

Claire.
